Ned's 20th Xmas Bash
"November 8th 1987, A disused butcher's meat store in a Stourbridge side street, the band who became Ned's Atomic Dustbin made their first noises together. Yes there were two bass players there that day but thankfully no glassy eyed pigs!"
So reads the sleeve note of the recently released new Sony/BMG compilation album: 'Some Furtive Years - A Neds Anthology'
Nearly 20 years ago, a singer, a drummer, a guitarist, a soon-to-depart-girl-backing-vocalist and two, yes two bass players met up and formed Ned's Atomic Dustbin in the humble, yet already blossoming indie-rock Mecca that is Stourbridge. Who could have known those five remaining lads would wind up selling a million albums and leave a dirty great footprint on the UK charts with 3 Top 20 Singles and a No.4 entry for their debut album God Fodder? What's more several world tours and a worldwide live reputation to die for has left the Neds with a proud legacy and a cohort of die-hard fans the envy of any of their contemporaries!
Neds glory days came to an end in 1995, when, faced with the onslaught of grunge and Britpop they imploded and split.
In 2000 three of the original members: Jonn, Alex and Dan decided to reform the band recruiting two new members and Neds have been playing a handful of shows every year since then.
This year Neds have seen a mini-revival take them back into the limelight with a triumphant headline set on the Leftfield Stage at Glastonbury, heralded by Q Magazine's Glastonbury Daily as 'highlight of the day'. This, following Sony/BMG's decision to release a new compilation of the band's best work from the years they were distributed by the biggest label in the world, has brought a whole new generation of Neds fans along for the ride.
In 2006, Neds wrote their first new material in 11 years in the shape of 'Hibernation' a new single to be released on the band's new home-made Spitfirepink label.
Life-long fans of the band and co-conspirators of 12:42 Films, Carl Beebee and A J Davies felt that this landmark of the Neds returning to the studio deserved a documentary and so set about filming the rehearsal and recording of the new song as well as their three live shows in Birmingham and London. Now available online through www.twelve42.com, the result of that filming is a DVD called Ned's Atomic Dustbin: Don't Exist.
Already an eventful year, 2007 sees Neds celebrating 20 years in style as they announce a gig in their spiritual Xmas home of Wolverhampton...
Ned's Xmas shows at Wolverhampton Civic Hall were the highlight of their year, regularly attracting fans from across the globe (Australia, Japan, US, Germany, France, Ireland!) to sample the extra-special atmosphere and now the boys have decided to revive the tradition and play Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall to celebrate their 20th year this Xmas!
Don't miss superb support from Birmingham's own... The Lights
