The Nightingales, Vix Fuzzbox & Ted Chippington team up for a one-off special show to mark the 25th anniversary of a time when three legendary Midlands-based acts headed out on tour, and released the Vindaloo Summer Special single "Rockin' With Rita". Come and relive the magical Summer of 1986!
The Nightingales Seminal post-punk legends The Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early '80's as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, for whom they recorded more sessions than any other band, bar The Fall. They also regularly toured the UK and Northern Europe, as headliners and supporting acts as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico. Since recently reforming, the band have been invited to play various festivals in Europe and the States, including Glastonbury and SXSW. Their comeback single "Let's Think About Living" was 'Single Of The Week' on BBC 6 Music & Track Of The Month in the Observer Music Monthly. Their knack of fusing Beefheart licks and pulverising rhythms with a strangely sensitive cynicism, have left a far-reaching musical legacy, leading to the mooted release of a forthcoming tribute album on Domino Records. This UK tour culminates in a headline appearance at Stewart Lee's curated festival at the Southbank Centre's Purcell Rooms, in advance of imminent National Treasure status. These shows will see the only opportunity to buy the Nightingales' new EP, "The Lost Plot" recorded by Hans Joachim Irmler of krautrock legends Faust. "Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980's to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans" - JOHN PEEL Lloyd is the most underestimated songwriter of his generation - THE INDEPENDENT, UK The Nightingales - they're back and they're marvellous - MARC RILEY/BBC 6 MUSIC, UK With The Fall getting Lifetime Achievement awards and Gang Of Four canonised it is long past time the wayward genius of Robert Lloyd and his cohorts was recognised - RECORD COLLECTOR, UK The Nightingales in Southend on Friday jetted in to my top ten gigs of all time - PHILL JUPITUS/BBC 6 MUSIC, UK The Nightingales revisited their past and offered up the future. Still stunningly relevant - LONDON EVENING STANDARD, UK
Ted Chippington Top entertainer Ted Chippington is celebrated as the inventor 'the first post-alternative comedian', having an (unintentional) influence on British comedy as we know it today, before retiring to be a truck driver. Award-winning Stewart Lee writes: "In the late 1980s, I met other teenage, would-be comics who knew Ted's lone album, Man In A Suitcase, off by heart. Ted taught us that a bad audience reaction didn't necessarily mean that what you were doing was worthless. I now think you can hear second and third hand echoes of Ted in the routines of comics who probably never even heard him. The relentlessness of Ricky Gervais' Aesop's Fables bit is Ted with a tailwind, and in 2005, when I had the superbly baffling young Edinburgh fringe award-winner Josie Long open for me on tour, a Leeds punter remarked, "This is the worst thing I've seen since Ted Chippington, 20 years ago." I couldn't have been happier. Ted Chippington was the first post-alternative comedian, and without him, everything would be different. Not necessarily worse. But different." Victoria Perks (AKA ViX Fuzzbox) Vix's debut solo single "u belong 2 me" is just the start of her intrepid new musical adventure into the earthy realms of Americana/New Country/Folk-Rock/Pop. This song was previously covered by the likes of Bob Dylan and Patsy Cline. When not gigging, the talented songstress is currently in the studio exploring her own interpretations of other favourite songs and original material in this genre. It's already looking like quite an eclectic mix! Perhaps better known up until now, as 'ViX' the lead singer/songwriter of all-girl band "We've got a ...FUZZBOX... and we're gonna use it!!" The schoolgirls got together in 1985 and after worldwide success with indie anthem "Rules and Regulations"and chart hits such as "Pink Sunshine" and "International Rescue". They parted company in 1991, until their reunion in 2010, prompted by ViX's appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. They are still, to this day, the UK's most successful all-female band! ViX toured the UK and Emirates supporting the likes of Paul Weller, Fun Lovin' Criminals, The Wailers, The Christians, Arrested Development etc with her all-girl band "ViX n The Kix" and toured the UK and Japan with The Wildhearts' frontman's supergroup "Ginger and the Sonic Circus". This will be her first appearance at The Slade Rooms.
